Annual juried art show presented by the Brevard Watercolor Society, focused on the plantsand wildlife of Florida. This watercolor show originated as a cooperative effort between the Brevard Watercolor Society (BWS) and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR) in 2006 and has continued yearly as a favorite show. There are two categories, Flora (landscapes, waterscapes, plants and flowers) and Fauna (living and breathing creatures) that occur naturally in Florida. Awards are presented for Best of Show and several awards in each category, and paintings are available for purchase.
From an outsider’s perspective, this African-American family lives a normal suburban life. Dad helps mom around the house, the daughter is an overachieving high school student and the son has a loving relationship with his parents. However, through the eyes of the mother’s bipolar disorder and mental health struggles, the family starts to question what the actual definition of “normal” is. Is life just an illusion of beautiful memories? Or do we have to face our inner conflicts in order to gain clarity? In a new concept of this powerful rock musical, the story wrestles with the stigma around mental health in the BIPOC/black community and the effects it has on family dynamics.Trigger Warnings: This show contains language, and themes of death, grief, drug use, sex, mental health, electroshock therapy, neglect, emotional abuse, and suicide. Due to these themes and situations, this show is not recommended for audiences under 16.Directed by Shonn McCloud

The Studios of Cocoa Beach is presenting “Jan Weigold Bryant and Her Class Artists: An Exhibition”. Jan is one of the dedicated instructors at the Studios of Cocoa Beach, where she teaches watercolor and acrylic painting. This October, Jan and artists in her classes and workshops will exhibit their works.
Jan taught at two universities, but she prefers “Teaching individuals who aren’t looking for a grade, but for the enjoyment of seeing the beauty in the world and transferring it to their chosen medium in their particular style. It’s not important to “paint like Jan”. Each artist has a unique outlook and my goal is to help them open up and allow their creativity to express what they are seeing.
The students in Jan’s classes range from the beginner to advanced. Jan’s motivational encouragement helps them on their artistic journey with the added benefit of trying new techniques. Several have been with Jan over a length of time and the exhibition is a tribute to their artistic growth.
The exhibit runs from October 3 to 29. The gallery at 165 Minutemen Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach is open Monday 9 am to 2 pm, Tuesday to Saturday 9 am to 7 pm and Sunday 1 to 6 pm.
